課程概述

This course will introduce the idea of Romantic imagination which involves the secularized theology, philosophy of polarity, and psychology of the sublime. In an age of revolution and counter-revolution, of the sublime ideal and its failure, the exploration of self and construction of identity through literary writing in the 18th century also encounter similar conflicts and struggles. The emotional responses to the Romantic experiences that seek expression will be examined particularly in the literary criticism, poetical works and the Notebooks of Coleridge. It will also be examined that how the philosopher-poet’s imagination that dissolves and constructs recreates the Romantic archetype of wanderer whose endless border-crossing comes to embody the discovery of self and the ideal of transcendence.

課程目標
This course aims to familiarize the student with the poetics and philosophical thinking of Coleridge concerning the creativity and destructivity of imagination. It also aims to offer a historically informed study of Coleridge’s psychological insight of self.
